stitching the moon

adding a little background to the moon tonight, sometimes I have to shift to a different project while things joggle loose in my head. I'm feeling a little stuck on the icons, so off to the moon i go...

after snow afternoon

back door view
We had a brilliant sunny day today. The azelea leaves are rolled up tightly against the cold so we are keeping indoors. Looking out the back window I can see the tracks of deer along the edge of the garden, hard to photo they show up only on the right side. Last night when Zena and I went for the evening pee walk she was quite sure that something was out there in the woods, looks like she was right.

still going

It felt warm today at 28 degrees. Big snow/wind is predicted for tomorrow then a drop back to bitter temps. We worry more about wind than snow here. A power outage takes not just our electricity but our water and heat as well. It sounds like the really powerful winds will be on the coast tomorrow, hope everyone there stays safe and warm. Meanwhile I am filling the tub and charging all my devices.
I have re-begun my habit of getting up early to do a little work as the day begins. The act of putting my creative work and myself first soothes me. It means I can go about my day without that pressure building up in me. Its easier to be clearer in the morning. Tough to manage it on weekends though.

Winter garden

cardinal and junco

Its COLD here, this is the part of winter that grinds down on you if you let it. Getting outside to do even simple chores can start to wear on you, its gritty, salty, stark and most of all cold. Even going to the transfer station to drop off the recycling is made that much worse.
Glocester Transfer Station
Yesterday was a bit warmer so I did the outside chores and took a few photos
I notice different things in the winter, like how the azalea leaves curl up when they are cold to protect themselves. They make a good thermometer, the tighter the curl the colder the air.
azalea buds
I leave  most seed heads on the flowers and grasses, partly to protect the root crown and also to provide food for and critters or birds that are looking for a meal. I plan to get more native plants into the gardens to provide as much habitat as I can
miscanthus in the snow
I'm keeping the feeders full too. The birds seem to appreciate having full bellies. They need extra to keep warm

time to start a fire to keep us warm tonight while we continue to hunker
